USA / Germany, 2004. Directed by Bill Condon. Liam Neeson, Laura Linney, Chris O’Donnell, Peter Sarsgaard, Timothy Hutton, John Lithgow, Tim Curry.
Intelligent, thoughtful biopic of one of recent history's most fascinating and complex characters. Because it's refreshingly underplayed by all, the significance of the research work into sexuality is made all the more startling. Laura Linney is particularly good, and has the best line in the movie: "I think I might enjoy that, yes." At turns funny, poignant, thoughtful and fascinating, this delights from start to finish and has a determinedly non-dramatic ending. One other highlight worth mentioning: a rather wonderful cameo from Lynn Redgrave.
